Valley Montessori School opened in Livermore in 1976 and became a not for profit organization in 1996. VMS is organized as a California nonprofit corporation (501 C3) and governed by a voluntary Board of Trustees.
Valley Montessori School (VMS) provides a unique experience meeting the individual needs of children from eighteen months through eighth grade. We have a history of success spanning over thirty five years. VMS has grown from six students in a rented space in 1976 to serving approximately 450 students currently.
Our Montessori philosophy and talented teachers provide a model place for children. The excellence of our programs led to the steadily increasing enrollment and a need for a larger facility. In 2000, VMS began a Building Campaign and successfully raised 1.2 million dollars over three years from generous members of the community, foundations, and businesses for a new facility designed and built to meet our needs at the time. In 2002, 370 students and 50 staff members moved into our current facility
1273 North Livermore Avenue in Livermore, CA and have enjoyed an exemplary program on a beautiful site. In Fall 2010, VMS opened a beautiful new middle school building which now serves over 85 students.
In 2005, VMS became the first Montessori school in California to be fully accredited by the American Montessori Society (AMS) and the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) for preschool through eighth grade. VMS also became a provisional member of the California Association of Independent Schools (CAIS) in 2012. In early 2014, VMS will undergo a three-way re-accreditation with American Montessori Society (AMS) and Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) and California Association of Independent Schools (CAIS) – another first!
